Making Of Me: John Waters

When I was God only knows how old, my mother brought home a box set of John Waters movies. I had no idea who he was at the time or what kind of phenomenal impact he would have on my life. I was like 8 or something, how could I possibly ever fathom that a series of films would change the way I saw life.  The box set contained four VHS tapes. The first one I was permitted to watch was Hairspray & I instantly fell in love with it, watching it over & over again. My mother told me that the mother in the film was actually a man & I found this completely amazing. Every time I watched it I felt the need to point out when they showed him out of drag, whether or not the person knew already knew it. The second was Polyester & it went right over my head, the whole thing. I had no idea what any of it was about & the only thing I ever distinctly remembered about it was watching a teenage girl strangle a woman with what I assumed was a lamp made of yarn. I liked the movie, I  just had no idea what it was actually about.
The two other movies the set contained my mother would not let me watch but I was dying to. On the cover of one was a man dressed in drag (the same as before) in a red dress & outrageous make up, pointing a gun towards some off screen sorry sucker. It was called Pink Flamingos. I assumed it had something to do with lawn furniture though not sure how the cover tied in with it. On the cover of the second a woman in a tiny leopard print dress sat proactively in the middle of a bunch of cops dressed in leather. I had no idea what it could possibly be about, all I know is that I had to watch it. I had no idea who the woman was or why cops would wear leather but whatever the answer was I knew it was badass. It would be years before I found out I was correct.

A long time passed before I ever set eyes on the box set again. In the winter of my senior year of high school me & my friends decided we were going to have a BBQ. (Yes, in January. This has to do with John Waters’ do you expect this to make sense?) After most of the guests had left the only people that remained was myself & my two insane friends Sean & Wriston. I don’t know if it was late but I know it was dark & cold so we had little business outside (also Wriston had decided to piss on the charcoals & the smell was too unbearable to stay in the yard). So we took refuge in my living room, raiding through old videos in hopes of something interesting. We found some old tape about dragons that Wriston said he remembered being awesome from his youth. After about a half hour we decided his younger self was an idiot & continued in search for something better. That is when Sean pulled out Pink Flamingos. Both boys had heard good things about the movie & I had always wanted to see it, so we popped the taped hoping to get better result than our last. What we got was the best possible results.
To this day there is nothing that can match what I felt when I first watched Pink Flamingos. Both tasteless & hilarious, the movie changed my definition of cool in 93 minutes. Only Glenn Milstead could dress like a woman, eat dog shit off the street & call himself Divine. He was in every single way. He made filth chic & destroyed how I saw the world. Nothing was sacred, nothing was taboo.  Not gays, Nazis, cannibalism, murder, incest, nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Everything was up for grabs. Nothing was normal anymore. Nothing was safe.
Soon after I showed the movie to my friend Jen & we become obsessed. For the next few months we went on a John Waters binge, renting every movie he was involved with. Cry-Baby, Pecker, Desperate Living, Serial Mom, A Dirty Shame, Female Trouble. & everyone we were close to became susceptible to it. You couldn’t be friends with us without having to sit through at least Pink Flamingos. Those who couldn’t were rarely around much longer. If you couldn’t accept the John Water’s lifestyle then you wouldn’t worth knowing. I still hold that truth to this day, along with everything else John Waters has taught me.
Embrace your weirdness. Live without shame. & never ever keep any perception of time.

15 Songs You Didn’t Hear This Year Cause You Were Busy Listening To Shitty Music

So while you were all listening to All Time Low while simultaneously reaching an all time low in your lives, I was listening to better music. & I don’t mean that in a bitchy way. The band’s name really says it all. Anyway, all year I’ve been combing the earth for new music that you’ve probably missed while attending Bill & Trav’s Bogus Journey Tour. Again, name speaks for itself. They could have used “Excellent Adventure” but they didn’t. Guess they knew it was false advertising. But enough about shitty music, lets talk about the awesome songs that were released this year that you missed.

Florence & The Machine - Kiss With A Fist (Kiss With A Fist)
Amanda Palmer - Guitar Hero (Who Killed Amanda Palmer)
Laura Marling - The Captain & the Hourglass (Alas I Cannot Swim)
Murder By Death - Spring Break 1899 (Red Of Tooth & Claw)
Be Your Own Pet - Becky (Get Awkward)
Man Man - Poor Jackie (Rabbit Habbits)
Tom Gabel - Random Hearts (Heart Burns EP)
Those Dancing Days - I Know Where You Live (In Our Space Hero Suits)
Cold War Kids - Something Is Not Right With Me (Loyalty to Loyalty)
We Are Scientists - Let’s See It (Brain Thrust Mastery)
The Mountain Goats - Lovecraft In Brooklyn (Heretic Pride)
Black Lips - Bad Kids (Good Bad Not Evil)
Why? - Fatalist Palmistry (Alopecia)
Ida Maria - I Like You So Much Better When Your Naked (Fortress Round My Heart)
Girl Talk - The entire Feed The Animals album ---Whole album runs together like one brilliant 53 minute song

I actually started writing little paragraphs about each song but stopped when I realized it was pointless. On buzznet, when it comes to music I am basically the equivalent to an old woman yelling at kids to pull their pants up & get off her lawn.

Seven Essential Songs For Hallloween

The perfect Halloween mix is a hard thing to create. I should know, every Halloween I try. & every Halloween I get really frustrated & never finish it. There are so many directions to go. You can go with your classic tacky tunes like the Monster Mash or just make a whole CD full of pyschobilly & horror punk songs as their genres generally apply to halloweenish themes. Or you can just leave on the Misfits for the whole month of October & you would be pretty much set. Whatever songs you decide to play this year here are some essentials that no Halloween is complete with.

Bauhaus – Bela Lugosi’s Dead

In my mind this will always & forever be the theme to Halloween. The whole song, which is nine minutes long, is just down right creepy. The way the guitar drones on & Peter Murhy cries “Undead, Undead” over & over again is enough to send chills down any skeletons spine.

 Concrete Blonde – The Bloodletting

Best song ever written about vampires, hands down. This is the kind of song that makes you want to wear all black, drink red wine & smoke cloves all day.

The Cramps – Surfin’ Dead

The Cramps are one of those bands that have a lot of Halloween themed songs. I Was A Teenage Werewolf, Zombie Dance, Human Fly, Aloha From Hell. Almost any of their songs are prefect for the ghoulish occasion, but I feel like Surfin’ Dead fits the mood best.

Anything by The Misfits

Seriously, they don’t have one song that isn’t appropriate for Halloween. All of them about zombies, skulls, killing people, monsters, et cetera. But if you don’t want to play the same band over & over, you are in luck cause everyone & their mother has covered a Misfits song. My personal favorites being Skulls by the Lemonheads, Halloween by Alkaline Trio, Hybrid Moments by Idiot Pilot & No Use For A Name, Where Eagles Dare by Atom & His Package, Astro Zombies by My Chemical Romance, & a very nice Misfits Medley done by Zombina & the Skeletones.

The Ramones – Pet Semetery

The song stated above was written for the movie adaptation of the Stephen King book of the same name. So you know its fucking good. I was raised on the Ramones & Stephen King. Don’t question my logic.

Screamin’ Jay Hawkins – I Put A Spell On You

This song never fails to blow me away. I honesly don’t even know what to say about it. It would be a sin not to play it on Halloween, that’s how amazing it is.

Siousxie & The Banshees – Halloween

Similar to the Cramps, this band has a handful of songs for halloween. Generally speaking Goths capture the dark spirit of the season, instead of just screaming about blood and zombies, they really make you feel like that apocalypse is right at your door.

So there they are. Seven songs (well actually six songs & a band, but whatever)  you have to have on your Halloween mix this year. & if you don't Satan will eat your soul. TRUFAX.

Try Honesty

So I remember back in my eljay days that alot of times people would post these entries where they ask people what the think of them really & that its okay to comment anonymously. I always really wanted to do this but I didnt really interact with too many people there so it seemed kind of like a wasted effor. I always figured it was pretty much impossible to do this on buzznet since you cant sent a journal to have anon comments (I have tried several times, & fail every). But there is more than one way to do anything. Yesterday, IkkyG posted a message box where people could comment anonymously to tell her what they really thought of her. Now finally I can finally live out my dream of being trashed talked to my face on the internet. Though I doubt mine will be nearly as entertaining as hers, I am genuinely interested to hear what people have to say about me.

So be honest, be real. Lets give this thing a go, shall we?

A Should Be Soundtrack (Part 2)

A few months ago me & MelodyA made "A Should Be Soundtrack" to a fake horror movie. Since then I have always wanted to do it again but never could think of any good soild ideas to make one for. But a plot has been settling in my mind for a few months so I figured I would give it a go.

The idea for this movie is painfully simple & I am pretty much ripping off others. Its like a mix between Heathers & Suicide Club.
I can't think of zero way to eloquently explain this so here are just my jumbled thoughts. So basically the movie takes place in the typical suburbs mainly around this one click of outcast punk kids. The, I suppose, leader of the group is this girl who when they were in junior high was part of main popular group & then discovered punk rock. She is still a total snobby bitch, perhaps even bigger than popular kids. Punk is just a more fun & easier to raise hell with. So in still having this attitude she is in constant rivalry with her old friends who rule the school Mean Girls style. One day after an over the top prank done on the outcasts they confront the main popular girl & accidentally kill her. Like Heathers they decide to make it look like a suicide & all is fooled. Then they kill off another one of the girls & another. Until a suicide trend is actually sparked in the school & all the cool kids are (as they say) doing it.
I can think of no epic ending for this movie, or no moral thing to learn from it. Nor can I even think of a name. Maybe you guys can help me out with that. But what I did do what come up with a really bitching soundtrack.

I can think of no epic ending for this movie, or no moral thing to learn from it. Nor can I even think of a name. Maybe you guys can help me out with that. But what I did do what come up with a really bitching soundtrack.

Black Flag - Nervous Breakdown
Zombina & The Skeletones - Villian
Refused - New Noise
Schoolyard Heroes - Plastic Surgery Hall Of Fame
Bomb The Music Industry! - 5 Funerals
Misfits - Where Eagles Dare
Richard Hell & The Viodoids - Blank Generation
World/Inferno Friendship Society - Zen & The Art Of Breakign Everything In This Room
My Chemical Romance - Teenagers
Jack Off Jill - Devil With A Black Dress On
Eddie & The Hot Rods - Teenage Depression
TISM - Kill Yourself Now & Avoid The Rush
Bratmobile - Eating Toothpaste
Circle Jerks - Live Fast Die Young
T.S.O.L. - World War III
Bad Brains - Pay To Cum
Adolescents - Creatures
Midnight Creeps - All For One & Fuck 'Em All
7Seconds - 99 Red Balloons

So what do you guys think? Questions? Complations? Suggestions? Can think of a title for this horrible movie? An ending? Anything?
I'd love to hear it.

Let's Do It

Alex told me to do this so here I go.

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on yaoi, the benefit of revolutions, sex, drugs, rock n' roll, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc. Repost in your own journal so that we can all learn more about each other.

So C'mon! Hit me with your best shot!

One For The Witches : A Mix

One of the main reasons I started making mixes was because I really love introducing people to new music. There is just something really gratifying of being responsible for someone’s favorite band when knowing with out you they would have never even heard of them. I am not saying I have superior musical taste than anyone (though I do), but I am just good at finding interesting things. & when I find them I like to share them with people because I think everyone has the right to enjoy good music.

Recently, I haven’t made anyone a particularly music centered mix. In high school I used to give my friend Johanna a mix every month of stuff I was really into & thought she would love. But more recently I have been going down a more lyrically based road. I still only use songs that I really like (excluding my Jersey mix), but its more of what they say than the sounds.

As most people know who frequent my page, I am absolutely obsessed with a little band called World/Inferno Friendship Society. The best term I can possibly think of to describe them is “circus punk”. I am not even sure if that is a real musical term. But if we are splitting hairs here, the closest actual musical genres to it are gypsy punk (Gogol Bordello) & cabaret punk/dark cabaret (the Dresden Dolls). After listening quite a bit to aforementioned artists I wanted to find similar things, which led me to making this mix.

The best way to put it, is that this is a gypsy/cabaret themed mix. There is a handful of folk punk on here that I felt really connected musically with the theme. But its less punk & more Balkan beats & cabaret keyboards here. I believe that a lot of this stuff is truly extraordinary & I wanted to share it with all of you in hopes that you lot feel the same way.

I am honestly not expecting a lot of you to like this but I thought it would give it a shot anyway.

I really hope someone enjoys this. I was up all night trying to finish this, its 7:30 now. I have zero intentions of sleeping today & my hair looks like such a mess its can probably pass as fashionable.

I wish I had a cigarette & some coffee.

Auditory Blessings,

Shannon

(PS - Everything should be in order in the download but I accidentally left Guyamas Sonora so its probably the last track instead of the second. & I say second because I put a nice little opening present there for you called I Was Stolen By The Gypsies)

Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die.

Never plan kisses. They aren't as fun that way.

3. What song are you listening to?
.    A Stare Like Yours by the Thermals

4. Who does it remind you of?

I rather not think of who it reminds me of at the moment.

5. Last movie you watched? with who?
Probably something with John Waters with Vitaly.

6. Which of your friends lives closest to you?

I would say JBK because technically her house is a few blocks away but she goes to school in Philly. After that it would be Lemarr but he goes to school upstate. So I guess Helena, ever though we dont talk much..

7. What CD is in your stereo?

   Probably a mix.

8. Has a friendship ended recently that you wish hadn't?
Sorta. We kinda patched things up, but its not the same.

9 & 10 where are you?

11. What are you most looking forward to?

Nothing off the top of my head, though I am sure there are tons that I should be for.

12. What are your nicknames?
Sha-nana, Rev, & last night they started calling me Malice.

13. Describe your dream life:

Doing something I absolutely love & making good money for it while living in a giant loft in Brooklyn or somewhere where its always warm by the beach with a gay man in a rock band. Falling in love with someone who makes me mixes would also be boss.

14. Where would you like to live?
     Somewhere warm.

15. Last time you spent the night at someone's house?
Jeanâs after seeing Man Man, which was forever ago. Most people stay here because my mom usually passes out early & can sleep like a rock so we can pretty much do whatever. Not to mention itâs a pretty decent size & there is always alcohol.

16. When was the last time you were extremely disappointed?
Last night. When I traveled 2 hours in a car to Connecticut, was forced to listen to Blink 183 & music from Zelda against my will only to show up at a party where most of the alcohol was gone.

TEN LASTS:

1. Last phone call you made: I called Vitaly to tell him I left my squash in the back of Christians car & to hold on to it for me til the next time I saw him, which he didnt sound thrilled about. But that might have just been because earlier I threatened to kill him with 4 inch heels when he drank all the alcohol we brought.
2. Last phone call you received: Alex, it was a missed call. I was supposed to tell her where the party was & totally slipped on it.
3. Last person/people you hung out with? I was at a party last night but I mostly chilled with Chris, Christian, & Katie. We were the social lepers of the party.
